Scalable Distributed Web Sessions With MySQL

There are dozens of non-scalable, complex techniques for user-session
management in web applications. Many high-traffic sites don't use
sessions at all (often hitting their transactional databases), or
attempt to "stick" users to one particular server, which adds complexity
and reduces fault tolerance.
MySQL allows a simple, elegant, and highly scalable solution for web
session management, using only one three-column table. A couple of
clever hacks--along with the speed and simplicity of MySQL--can give
sysadmins peace of mind and developers the ability to simplify
architectures and cut out code.
Java's object-oriented semantics are a natural fit for session tracking,
but the same concepts could be implemented in any web language.
